The all-singing, all-dancing female robot

The age of robots being used in everyday homes has come a step nearer with the development of a new humanoid.

And once they've done the dishes, they can join you in bop round the living room.

For the catchily named HRP-4C, dubbed Divabot, which has a realistic face and moveable features, can sing too.

And yesterday she showed off her neatest dance steps at an exhibition in Tokyo.

The grand unveiling was staged by Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, the country's biggest public research organisation with around 3,200 employees.

They claim to have developed software that allows anyone without robotic expertise to program movements.

And they dressed HRP-4C in a yellow dress and gave her a backing group to prove their point.

Using a mouse, users can easily create complicated movements, such as dancing and jumping, according to the institute.

The software can calculate expected shocks to the robot, for example when it jumps up and down.

'With the software, we hope to make robots act, sing and even walk on a catwalk during a fashion show. We want to create a new content industry with the technology,' said Shinichiro Nakazawa of the institute.

His colleague Masataka Goto added: This robot primarily utilises two technologies. One is for its singing voice.

'Last year, we used Yamaha's Vocaloid software to synthesize notes directly. But this year, we've used our own technology, called VocalListener.

This is a new technology, which synthesizes a singing voice on the computer side, as if imitating a person's singing voice.

'Also, for the robot's facial expressions, we've developed another new technology, called Vocawatcher. This analyses a video of a person singing, to create expressions naturally.'

Researchers used a real singer as a model, recording her every move as she sang a typical Japanese pop song.

The movements were mapped onto HRP-4C who was then able to mimic her real-life counterpart's every movement.

The team even helped the robot breathe realistically, by modeling real, human breathing sounds.

Radio Enoch

Interesting bit of history here for all you fellow British nationalists out there.. This is a recording of a pirate radio station broadcast by "Radio Enoch" which was originally transmitted in 1978.

Radio Enoch was operated out of various locations across the UK, but mainly within the West Midlands, homeland of its namesake, Enoch Powell. Enoch Powell was not connected with the radio station, however much of the content featured the politics and speeches of Enoch Powell.

Radio Enoch professed a right-wing viewpoint, being critical of immigration and multiculturalism. The manager claimed it operated as an unlicensed station because its views on race and immigration would prevent it from being able to broadcast in what it deemed a "socialist" media. The station was launched in 1978, broadcasting hour-long shows monthly.

The group behind Radio Enoch called themselves "People Against Marxism".

The General Post Office was unable to shut down Radio Enoch which had around 200 people involved with operating the station.

The rise of Thatcherism and a more conservative political climate signalled the end of Radio Enoch's usefulness. Its purpose in returning a Tory government complete,

Radio Enoch stopped broadcasting in June 1980, vowing to return if a socialist government returned, although it never did after the Labour party victory of 1997.

Police quiz man dressed as Nazi at wartime nostalgia event

Police were called to a village pub after the landlord dressed up as a Nazi for a wartime nostalgia celebration.

Jamie Hardie's SS costume included a swastika armband and – although not illegal in Britain – officers warned him that he could be inciting racial tension.

Organisers of The Yanks are Back in Saddleworth had issued guidelines banning the symbol from the event.

Mr Hardie, of The Granby Arms in Uppermill, said: "I simply hired the gear to give some authenticity to the event. There was nothing sinister about it. We simply dressed up to be part of the whole pageant."

His wife Debbie leads a shoebox campaign that has sent more than 2,000 care packages to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

She said: "Jamie did not intend to upset anyone. I am only sorry someone has seen it this way."

Police inspector Danny Milovanovic: "Police were trying to prevent any potential disorder occurring as a result of this."

Event organiser Paul Higginson said: "This was nothing to do with our show. We have a code of conduct about uniform. "

A spokesman for the costume hire firm, in Huddersfield, Yorks, said: "We hire scores of German uniforms to people who take part in re-enactments. They are very stylish – and people like dressing up. "

If only they were as quick to arrest those who burn Union Jacks on our streets and carry placards stating our head is likely to be removed because we do not worship as they do? Or to tackle gangs of foreigners and descendants of foreigners roaming our streets armed to the gills.

Now they, in my opinion, carry far more potential for disorder than a man in fancy dress in some village pub.

The truth of course is that this man's crime is being politically incorrect, a crime far more serious than threats to kill, traitorous behaviour or gang violence as I've listed above. They merely put these down to culture or social traits no matter how many patriotic people are offended or innocent young lads beaten with weapons or stabbed to death.

Big Brother does watch all things, but he only sees what he wants to see.

But let's face it, there is very little that whitey can do these days that cannot be said to offend at least one of the thousands of new cultures and races introduced into this country over the past few decades. Pretty soon they will just ban us going out.

I also notice how in these articles they always state "although not illegal in Britain" as if there should be a big " YET! " at the end, I reckon they are just waiting for the nod from their masters in Brussels myself.

Call to give London babies TB jabs as cases rise

Babies born in London must be vaccinated against tuberculosis to protect them against a resurgence of the disease, health experts have warned.

Routine immunisation is needed to combat increasing numbers of children and adults contracting TB which attacks the lungs and can prove deadly, according to the Health Protection Agency.

Almost 45 per cent of all cases involving children in the UK are in the capital because of the large immigrant population. Nine out of 10 cases occur in ethnic minorities.

TB was thought to have been almost eradicated in Britain with the number of cases falling to a low of 5,000 a year by the Eighties.

However the disease has been on the rise with 9,153 cases recorded last year. Health experts believe the threshold at which routine immunisation is required — 40 cases per 100,000 — has been reached across the capital.

Current policy has been to offer vaccination to children who are born abroad or whose parents are born abroad.

Dr Ibrahim Abubakar, from the HPA's Centre for Infections, said: “This increase shows we must remain vigilant in our fight against TB. This is an entirely preventable infection, but it can be fatal if prompt diagnosis and treatment are not given.

“People need to be aware of the main symptoms of TB, which include a fever and night sweats, a persistent cough, weight loss, and blood in your sputum [spit].

“If you experience two or three of these symptoms for more than three weeks, you should go to your GP.”

Flaming heck, first Brits were redheads

A genetic study has revealed a surprise about our ancestors, says Robin McKie

There is a small, windowless room on the ground floor of Oxford’s Radcliffe Infirmary that can be reached only by walking through a maze of narrow passageways. The hospital, built in the late 18th century, is old even by the normal standards of ageing National Health Service buildings. Nevertheless, it is in these antiquated surroundings that scientists have set up one of the most ambitious biological programmes attempted in Britain.

This is the base of the People of the British Isles project, which is using the power of modern genetics to show how people in different regions interacted over the past few thousand years, how they subjugated one another and how they passed on ideas, inventions and art.
In that little cubbyhole on the ground floor there is a bench fitted with high-technology gear used to isolate and copy DNA, a couple of tables with personal computers and several tall fridges. Inside these are rows of vials that hold the bloodline of the British people. Each vial contains DNA from a person who has taken part in the project and each sample has its own special story to tell.

Blood was collected from 11 sites for the project’s pilot study: Orkney, northeast England, Cumbria, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Oxfordshire, Pembrokeshire, Kent/Sussex, Devon and Cornwall. The researchers then used centrifuges to isolate the white cells, which are stuffed with DNA. Using the DNA — and thanks to advances in molecular biology — the team has begun to build up a pattern of different genetic variants for different parts of the British Isles.

From the moment they started to pull data from their machines, their findings produced fascinating information about one of the most conspicuous aspects of the British and Irish population: our redheads. Whether they are called carrot-tops, ginger-heads or “Titian blondes”, these people are blessed — or cursed, according to some of them — with flaming locks that have been a feature of people for millenniums, from Boudicca to Prince Harry.

The underlying causes of the condition were recently disentangled by a team led by Professor Jonathan Rees, a dermatologist based at Edinburgh University. It was discovered that hair colour is controlled by a gene called the melanocortin 1 receptor, or MC1R. Genes come in different variants and there are about 70 different versions of MC1R. Rees discovered that a subgroup of about half a dozen is closely involved in determining if a person will be red-haired or not.

“If you have one of these variants, your chances of having red hair are increased four or five times above the average,” said Rees. “However, if you have two of these variants — one inherited from your mother and one inherited from your father — your chances of being red-haired increase to 30 to 40 times the average.”

(This is exploited by forensic scientists when testing blood left behind at crime scenes. If they find two MC1R variants, police know there is a strong chance the culprit will be a redhead.)

Red hair today is generally associated with the Scots and Irish, but there have been no consistent efforts to establish the prevalence of the condition.

“It has actually become harder to find the prevalence of red hair today,” said Rees. “More and more women — and some men — now dye their hair and we simply have no idea if a redhead is a real one or if a blonde is a redhead under the dye. As a result the incidence of red hair in Britain is still a bit of a mystery.”

Enter the scientists of the People of the British Isles project: thanks to their efforts, this most distinctive characteristic is now opening up its mysteries for the first time. Testing their white cell samples for two of the half-dozen red-hair versions of the MC1R gene, they were able to show their frequency in each area of the British Isles. The results were intriguing.

Where one is the maximum value, they got figures of 0.16 and 0.23 for the frequencies of red-hair genes in Cornwall and Devon. The frequency in Oxfordshire was 0.07; in Sussex and Kent 0.13; in northeast England 0.11; in Lincolnshire 0.07; and in Cumbria nil. In Wales the figure was 0.21, and in Orkney a high 0.26. But the highest was in Ireland. Using data from other research studies, the team got a figure for Ireland of 0.31, confirmation of the stereotypical image of the red-haired Irishman.

The results are remarkable, as Sir Walter Bodmer, the Oxford geneticist leading the project, acknowledges: “I was amazed at them. I didn’t expect to see something like this.”

The research gives us, for the first time, an insight into the startling numbers of native people who have been described as having red hair in ancient times.

Famous British redheads include Queen Boudicca, who rebelled against the Romans and sacked London in AD60. She was described by Dio Cassius, the Greek historian, as being “tall and terrifying . . . a great mass of red hair fell over her shoulders”.
Over the centuries there have been many other famous red-haired Britons, including Elizabeth I, Oliver Cromwell, Nell Gwyn and Winston Churchill.

Nevertheless, today red locks are mainly associated with only certain areas, with Scotland being the principal focus in mainland Britain. Prominent Scots “ginger-heids” include Gordon Strachan, manager of Celtic, and Charles Kennedy, former leader of the Liberal Democrats.
But why do we have such numbers in these parts of the British Isles today and not others? The answer, says Bodmer, is that red-hair genes were common among the first Britons and that populations in the archipelago’s fringes still carry their bloodline.

“Genes for red hair first appeared in human beings about 40,000 to 50,000 years ago,” agrees Rees.

These genes were then carried into the islands by the original settlers, men and women who “would have been relatively tall, with little body fat, athletic, fair-skinned and who would have had red hair”, says David Miles, of English Heritage.

Redheads therefore represent the land’s most ancient lineages. So if you want an image of how those first people appeared, don’t think of a hairy savage with a mane of thick black hair. Contemplate instead a picture of a slim, ginger-haired individual: Prince Harry, perhaps, or the actress Nicole Kidman who has Scottish and Irish descent.

Why did those early Britons have so many redheads in their midst in the first place? Is there an evolutionary advantage to having red hair in this part of the world? According to Rees, the answer may be yes.

The MC1R variants that cause red hair also have an effect on the skin. As a result, redheads do not make enough of the dark pigment melanin to protect them against the sun’s powerful ultraviolet rays. Their skin rarely tans. It just burns or freckles.

In Africa, where modern humans first evolved 150,000 years ago, this would have been fatal. In northern Europe, however, melanin-free skin could have provided an advantage because we make vitamin D in our skin when sunlight shines on it.

Dark-skinned people were protected against the African sun, but their ability to make vitamin D would have been badly affected in relatively gloomy northern Europe. This could have caused rickets, resulting in weak bones and curved legs — bad news for a hunter-gatherer. Rickets is particularly damaging for women, as it increases pelvic deformations, raising the risk of death in childbirth. So, the theory goes, we evolved white, melanin-free skin that has no dark pigment to block sunlight and cause rickets. Red hair was a side effect.

So there it is: being a redhead could mean you possess an evolutionary advantage over non-red-haired people. Or it could simply be a matter of luck. Those MC1R variants may have appeared by chance and survived in northern Europe where they caused no harm.

Scientists in the United States and Britain have uncovered another surprising aspect to having ginger locks. Researchers have found that red-headed women are better able to tolerate pain than anyone else, including red-headed males. This is due to a protein produced by MC1R that does one thing in the skin and hair and another in the female brain.

At the human genetics unit at the Western general hospital in Edinburgh, Professor Ian Jackson has launched a study of redheads in the hope of developing new painkillers in the wake of this discovery and has found that redheads are better able to tolerate intense heat.

As a result, he is preparing to test the hypothesis that redheads should be able to tolerate hot spicy foods better than other people. Thus our ancient, divergent origins seem to have equipped some Britons with the ability to deal with one of the most powerful challenges of modern life: the vindaloo.

Pensioner spends over seven years doing 5,000 piece jigsaw puzzle... then finds ONE bit is missing

A pensioner who spent almost eight years working on a 5,000-part jigsaw finally finished it - only to find there is one piece missing.

Dedicated Jack Harris, 86, had been painstakingly piecing together the puzzle since 2002, when he was given the jigsaw as a Christmas present.

But when he put the last piece in place and stood back to admire his work, he was horrified to spot a tiny hole in the middle of his 'finished' jigsaw, where the missing piece should be.

The puzzled pensioner has searched his home in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, for the elusive piece but his family fear it has gone for good.

They have even asked the puzzle's manufacturer if they could provide a spare - but Mr Harris has taken so long to complete the jigsaw that Falcon Games has stopped making it.

His daughter-in-law Eve Harris, who gave him the Christmas present, said she thought the 5,000-piece puzzle would be a challenge for the retired businessman.

He is given a new jigsaw every year, and usually finishes them by spring-time, but this puzzle was to prove different.

Mr Harris said he started the 5ft jigsaw - which shows the 19th Century oil painting The Return of the Prodigal Son, by James Tissot - as usual.

He spread the 4,999 pieces across his dining table and confidently thought he would be done by summer.

But seven years later the pieces were still spread across the table as he struggled to complete the mammoth puzzle.

Mrs Harris said: 'We got him this one as a bit of a joke really, because he always boasted he could get them done so quickly, he's a bit of a whiz with them.

'There was so much to do. We'd all have a go at it each time we went over there, but it seemed to just take forever.

'It was marvellous to see it finally completed. But when we saw there was a piece missing from the middle, we just couldn't believe it.

'He was just so disappointed when he found one bit was missing. It's sad really because now it will never be completed.'

The family fear the missing piece has been thrown away by mistake, or eaten by one of Mrs Harris' two pet dogs.

Mr Harris said: 'I always said I could get the puzzles done by the end of March so I could get out into the garden, but this one took a bit longer.'

Evolution

The process of natural selection whereby the strongest, most adaptable and resourceful organisms are able to survive and reproduce while the less viable ones become extinct. The evolution of mankind has always been spearheaded by a few gifted races and their most outstanding representatives, albeit at the expense of their natural inferiors. Liberalism seeks to invert this process by exalting and fostering weakness, humility, mediocrity, degeneracy, and the mongrelisation of humanity. By contrast, the Race-and-Nation philosophy is entirely in accord with the cosmic scheme of things and must therefore ultimately triumph. The alternative is the collective regression of humanity.

'Extremism'

The majority of people are innately conservative (small ‘c’) and wary of anything sounding at all radical. This fact is cynically exploited by liberal politicians, who describe all opposing viewpoints as ‘extremist’, with a view to scaring the public away from them. British Nationalists are unblushingly ‘extremist’ in their opposition to a liberal ‘moderation’which is leading this country to disaster.

‘Moderation’ in the cause of treachery is no virtue; ‘extremism’ in defence of our nation is no vice.

Free Trade

An economic doctrine based on removing all undue governmental restraints on business enterprise. The word ‘undue’ is crucial here, since no sensible government can allow private businesses to engage in activities damaging to the national interest. In practice, some companies, especially those with international connections, are quite prepared to ignore the national interest whenever it suits their purposes. The test of a worthwhile business is that it not only shows a profit but that it also improves the quality of life of its employees and serves the national economic interest.

Freedom

Absence of unnecessary and unjust constraints on thought, speech and behaviour in society. Freedom, however, is necessarily limited by social obligations and legislation designed to provide an orderly and safe environment for the general public and to ensure conformity with certain standards of behaviour (aptly summed up by the phrase "Your freedom to wave your fist ends where my nose begins").

It is said that the real test of an allegedly free society is the way it treats its dissidents. Only those individuals who have personally tested the Establishment's tolerance (or lack of it) of political dissent are qualified to judge the real extent of personal liberty in Britain today. Their reports are at once very illuminating and profoundly depressing. We now have laws which make it a punishable offence to discriminate in favour of kinfolk, to recognise the actual differences between races and sexes, to make certain unfavourable but manifestly true comments about multi-racialism, and to demonstrate in support of British patriotism. Such tendentious legislation and ideological tyranny is repugnant to any genuine freedom-lover, but has been all too easily imposed on a population besotted with mindless entertainment and the dependency culture.

In an unjust society the worst people celebrate their freedom while the best are liable to find themselves in jail.

Family

The basic unit of any worthwhile and viable society. This is nowadays contested by feminists, homosexuals and dotty sociologists, with about as much credibility as criminals contesting law and order. It is incumbent on government to cherish family values by giving taxation benefits to married couples with children or with elderly or dependent relatives to support.

Marriage and parenthood must be regarded not as a right but a privilege. Motherhood must be seen to have a social status above that of any other female occupation. Breakdown of the (extended) family is self-evidently a prime cause of rising delinquency, drug addiction, child abuse, poverty, and an insupportable social services budget. A truly family-based socio-economic order is not only basic to the quality of life but also vastly cheaper in terms of taxation and social services.

'Gay'

Homosexual slang for male sex pervert. Such euphemisms are intended to hide disgusting behaviour behind an attractive label. In fact, less than 4 per cent of people are actively homosexual; and while some of these may exhibit ‘gaiety’ now and then most are notoriously neurotic and dismal specimens.

In any dialogue where someone uses the word ‘gay’ in this way, one should always insist on the term ‘sex pervert’ or ‘sodomist’ until the neutral word ‘homosexual’ is substituted.

Genocide

Campaign likely to exterminate a particular race, either by direct attack or by multi-racial policies which can only disadvantage that particular racial group and lead to its ultimate subjugation by others. In a world where the white race is vastly outnumbered, ‘multi-racialism’ is a plainly genocidal policy for white people.

Gender

The role of women is to complement men and not to compete with them. Sadly, when men cease to be men, some women are apt to assume male roles, however inadequately. Feminist policies have no place in a wholesome society and pose a real threat to womankind and children. No man worthy of the name should accept a subordinate role to a woman in those occupations obviously better engaged in by men than women; for example, heavy industry, the police, the armed forces and top business management.

There will always be some women unsuited to marriage and motherhood for one reason or another, and these can of course seek fulfilment in other ways. But those women besotted with gender issues are driven not by concern for natural justice but by private resentments arising from childhood traumas or unhappy personal experiences with men (see RP Syndrome).

'Gliberal'

Term of derision for those given to egalitarian claptrap.

'Human Rights'

A fashionable liberal term to describe what, at root, amounts to anarchy. There are no rights without commensurate responsibilities; and in any event so-called ‘human rights’ are never more than social or political conventions. Even the child's right to care and protection carries the responsibility to care for its parents when they become frail and dependent. Rights and duties are therefore indivisible sides of the moral coinage.

‘Humanity’

Another liberal buzz-word, denoting the presumed ‘totality’ of humankind and indiscriminate concern for any creature recognisably humanoid. No one ever did anything for ‘humanity’; and it can be taken as an infallible sign of political and religious humbug that those who profess an all-embracing concern for ‘humanity’ are the worst enemies of its best representatives.

Indoctrination

An attempt to gain uncritical acceptance of some concept or ideology. It takes more or less subtle forms depending on the nature of the message and the calibre of people exposed to it. Examples are legion in the content of party-political and religious tracts and mass media. Most ‘soap-operas’ today artfully insinuate multi-racial, feminist and homosexual indoctrination into their plots and casting, defending such tendentious tactics as ‘social realism’.

Integration

If something is an integral part of something else, then the latter could not exist without it; thus the yolk is integral to the egg as the egg is integral to the omelette. But the notion that Negroes and Asians can ever become ‘integral’ to British society is therefore patently absurd, since their departure would in no way diminish or damage that society. Such people may adopt the superficial attributes of the British native for reasons of social convenience; but they remain at best only passengers in a culture that is not their own. The so-called ‘black Englishman’, for example, is a complete oxymoron.

Intolerance

We should rejoice in our intolerance of invaders, renegades, traitors, parasites, perverts, criminals and other obvious threats to the health, happiness, prosperity and security of our kinfolk and country. When we cease to be intolerant of such people we also cease to be decent and loyal citizens of our homeland.

Justice

Supposedly the whole purpose and soul of the law. In practice the disparity between justice and law is all too apparent to those who emerge from complex, obfuscatory and expensive litigation with a manifestly unjust verdict.

Legislation is the instrument of political ideology, and when that ideology is fundamentally misconceived or corrupt we all have a duty to avoid it, frustrate it and finally eradicate it in the best interests of our kinfolk and country.

Under a corrupt regime, what is the virtue of being law-abiding?

Liberal

Refers to an ideological rag-bag of egalitarian, multi-racial, effeminate, welfare-mongering doctrines and their supporters. Liberalism is the church of self-righteousness, the sanctuary of traitors and the philosophy of fools. It is analogous to the AIDS virus in destroying the immunity of the body politic to self-destructive policies.

Loyalty

There is no honour without loyalty, and loyalty to the nationalist cause is simply an extension of loyalty to one's kith and kin. It is a commitment of heart as well as mind, and therefore soars above petty conformity and political dog-fighting. The real test of loyalty is seen in the extent to which individuals are prepared to sacrifice self-interest in pursuit of an ideal or adherence to a cause. One thing is therefore clear enough: the loyalty that costs nothing is worth nothing.

Leadership

This is the prerogative of naturally superior individuals and races, and is the cutting-edge of human evolution. Our main business as nationalists is to nurture and support the natural elite of our race, and to enlist in our ranks the kind of individuals most sensible parents would prefer as role-models for their children. To paraphrase Shakespeare, some are born leaders, some achieve leadership and others have leadership thrust upon them; which is to say that leadership is a compound of natural aptitude, motivation and favourable circumstance. But motivation is the dynamo of all achievement in the field of leadership.

‘Multi-cultural’

A liberal euphemism for multi-racial. To the extent that a society is ‘multi-cultural’/multi-racial it ceases to be a society in any meaningful or worthwhile sense. We are nevertheless told that British society is ‘enriched’ by the presence of other races and their so-called ‘cultures’; a contention which is impossible to justify on the evidence so far available. It takes rather more than curry parlours, dreadlocks, outlandish garments and primitive dancing to make a ‘culture’. And since when did our native European culture, at the crown of human achievement, need ‘enriching’ by the world's least successful peoples?

Masochism

Psychiatric term for a sexual perversion which derives gratification from personal punishment and humiliation. A common affliction among liberal sophisticates (many of them homosexual), who seek to expiate their guilt-feelings by promoting national and racial surrender and humiliation.

Multi-Racialism

Attempts to deny or ignore self-evident differences between the races regardless of the evidence from genetics, evolution, history, anthropology and everyday experience. It asks you to believe that the most successful race can remain so and even be improved by mixture with manifestly less successful races. They may as well contend that mixing the well water of primitive tribes with vintage wine will produce a beverage for connoisseurs!

‘Male Chauvinist’

Feminist term of abuse for any man worthy of the name.

Majority-Rule

A synonym for ‘democracy’. It is a fundamental contradiction in terms because application of this principle always results in an unruly state of affairs.

The only sensible form of government is by the natural élite of the race (not to be confused with the arbitrary ‘ennoblement’ of unworthy individuals by an effete and corrupt establishment).

Miscegenation

Inter-racial breeding. Popular with ethnic aliens as a way of insinuating themselves into white society, and also practiced by degenerate and sexually perverse/desperate Whites. As a tactic of ‘integration’ it is an obvious failure; it merely debases the white partner without improving the coloured partner's status or acceptability at all.

‘Multi-Racial Society’

Another contradiction in terms; to the extent that if it is multi-racial it cannot be a society.

‘Media Mafia’

Useful and fairly accurate label for those abusing their power and influence in the mass media to debase British nationhood and values by means of censorship, tendentious propaganda and heavily biased patronage.

Misinformation

Unwitting deception by those responsible for providing relevant, accurate and timely information. Attributable to personal ignorance and incompetence rather than perfidy or self-interest. (see ‘Disinformation’ and ‘Propaganda’).

Mind-set

Meaning at worst the mental ‘blinkers’ in the form of bias, bigotry, self-interest, ideology or plain ignorance which limit or distort an individual's perception of the real world. Mostly unconscious, it tends to make us see only what we want to see and to interpret events according to our preconceptions. There are, of course, circumstances where a particular mind-set is entirely sensible and appropriate, e.g. team-work, military discipline, respect for the law, health and safety precautions, basic morality, loyalty and so on.

Nationalist

Synonym for patriot. Supporter of the nation-state founded on racial integrity, a common culture, historic achievement, and occupation of the same homeland for centuries. One who is invariably loyal to his ancestry, kinfolk and native country.

Nation-State

An authentic nation-state incorporates certain basic features:-

• At least 90 per cent common racial ancestry.
• A common language (which does not exclude retention of some subsidiary ancestral languages like Gaelic).
• A shared culture in terms of racial literature, art, music, religion, science and technology.
• A highly-developed legislative and judicial system, including trial by jury, sensible rules of evidence and an independent judiciary.

Many of the so-called 'nations' set up during the last century (and particularly since 1945) must be regarded as synthetic and inherently non-viable. They are the product of political expediency and fashionable ideology of the egalitarian variety. Much, if not most, of the present international instability and conflict is a direct consequence of imposing an arbitrary and synthetic 'nationhood' on fundamentally disparate and incompatible populations; examples include African 'states', India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the USSR, most of Latin-America, Indonesia, Israel, Lebanon, Yugoslavia and some Arab republics. Many of these are also economically non-viable and remain 'independent' only in name, subsisting largely on Western charity.

'Negotiated Settlement'

The present government's term for protracted surrender to IRA terrorism. There can, of course, be no 'settlement' to detach Ulster from the United Kingdom and transfer it to the Irish Republic. The mere fact that the government is negotiating at all gives the IRA a coded message to the effect that, as and when it is politically expedient, Ulster will be betrayed. The Irish government has nothing to offer Ulster except renunciation of its spurious claim on that part of Ireland. British Nationalists will support their Ulster compatriots in preserving the territorial integrity of the UK by any means necessary.

Negrophilia

An extreme form of liberalism whereby negroes are absurdly over-indulged. Typical examples occur frequently in the mass media, publishing and entertainment worlds. Negrophilia finds its most extreme expression in miscegenation.

However, what sometimes passes for negrophilia is often the product of minds entirely lacking in any regard for black people but interested only in using their supposed 'grievances' for political purposes.

Parasite

There are only three kinds of relationship between different species:-

(i) Symbiotic, i.e. mutually beneficial.

(ii) Predator-Prey, the former always subsisting at the latter's expense.

(iii) Host-Parasite, the latter subsisting always at the former's expense.

A parasitic organism subsists wholly or mainly by attaching itself to a higher organism - without contributing anything which the host organism could not otherwise obtain from its own resources. The essence of the matter is that the parasite itself would cease to exist, or would suffer a greatly reduced quality of life, if separated from the unwitting/unwilling host, whereas the host does not need the parasite, and usually suffers more or less severely from its attachment, even to the point of its own premature extinction.

In the context of human evolution, some races have proved incapable of self-advancement beyond the bare subsistence level; consequently, they can only improve their lives by attaching themselves - i.e. becoming parasitical upon - more successful and resourceful races.

From the evolutionary standpoint, it is therefore accurate to describe some races as parasitical upon others. In the long term this tendency could well reach a point at which the host race is crippled by its parasites and the entire evolutionary process is put in jeopardy.

Passive Resistance

Means doing nothing at all to assist a bad government and everything short of criminal behaviour to get rid of it. It therefore represents the minimum response for anyone opposed to anti-British legislation.

'The People'

For the renegade politician the term 'people' simply means election-fodder, without regard to race, religion, language, education, family status, work record, service to the nation, etc. Whatever the subject under discussion, the acid test of any politician's credibility is his/her definition of 'the people' whose welfare is supposed to be the central concern. And anyone who fails to equate the 'British people' just with those of English, Welsh, Scots, Irish or kindred European ancestry has nothing to say worth listening to. So when you hear a politician refer to 'the people', simply ask: "What people?"

Political correctness

Derisive term for all attempts to re-write history, revise language and regulate behaviour in order to protect the self-esteem of racial and sexual minorities. Its most appropriate icon is the black lesbian dwarf wearing a crown.

Progress

This term is discredited when applied to fundamentally undesirable changes. Thus, for example, British power, influence and prosperity have actually regressed during the present century to an extent our ancestors would have deemed incredible; so politicians' talk of 'progress' is extremely suspect. Any country, like any individual, not actually gaining in power, influence, territory and other assets is not achieving progress.

Propaganda

Systematic measures to mislead the general public as to the true state of affairs, and to indoctrinate people with an inherently undesirable ideology. It relies upon ambiguity, half-truths, euphemism, censorship, ignorance, patronage, repetition and the 'media mafia', as well as downright lies. Thus, for example, all popular radio/TV programmes are loaded with 'political correctness' on subjects like multi-racialism, feminism, homosexuality, Gentile guilt, anti-nationalism and highly tendentious accounts of British history. Much the same applies to magazines and advertisements.

Proscription

Official outlawing of an organisation or faction. Jews, Blacks, Asians and liberals are always demanding proscription of the British Nationalist movement; but the problem for the Establishment is that, much as it would like to oblige, this would only create a dangerous 'underground' movement with very widespread popular support. Consequently, the Establishment resorts to more devious and indirect tactics to contain and frustrate the nationalist movement, for example:-

• The Race Relations and Public Order Acts.
• Legal and quasi-legal harassment of leading nationalists.
• Indulgence towards militant anti-nationalist organisations.
• Exclusion of nationalists and nationalist material from the mass media, libraries, booksellers, schools and colleges, all public and many private appointments.
• Prominent and generous support for multi-racial policies and activities in order to present nationalism as a 'lunatic fringe'.

These tactics seem to be working well enough so far to make legal proscription superfluous now or in the foreseeable future. Even so, proscription could still be the Establishment's last-resort tactic when the BNP attracts more and more popular support.

'Race Relations Industry'

Derisive term for the motley of renegade politicians, academics, aliens, media people, etc. involved in promoting multi-racialism. While this 'industry' succeeds, of course, all others fail.

'Racism'

Liberal term of abuse for the natural and altogether wholesome preference for people of one's own race. At bottom what is called 'racism' is neither ideology nor ignorant prejudice, but an ineradicable fact of human nature. The 'ism' suffix is therefore a deliberate but ultimately futile attempt to misrepresent this implacable fact as a mere matter of opinion or personal prejudice which can be corrected by 'education' (meaning indoctrination). As a social phenomenon 'racism' should be seen as an integral part of a nation's immune system, protecting it against potentially fatal infections by alien invaders. And on the same analogy, multi-racists perform the role of the AIDS virus in helping to destroy national immunity against alien invasions.

So if it is wrong to protect our nation from such invasions, it is also wrong for the healthy to resist disease.

Reactionary

The Marxists' term for anyone resisting the imposition of their own ideology. It implies that all other viewpoints have no intrinsic merit but only a greater or lesser capacity to impede the 'inevitability' of Marxist 'progress'. Of course, to the man at the North Pole everyone else is a Southerner; but where else can a man go?

Referendum

An opportunity to vote for or against a specific policy or measure instead of a political party. The use of referenda is becoming not only essential but also much more practical in an era where the party-political system no longer reflects or implements the will of the British people on fundamental issues like immigration, Euro-federalism, media pornography, basic education, crime and punishment, law and order, social priorities etc.

Computer technology today makes the process of conducting referenda very rapid, easy and economical.

The Establishment, and in particular the 'Westminster Club', naturally regard the whole idea of the referendum as abhorrent; knowing that the results of referenda on such basic issues would overwhelmingly reject its own policies and impositions. We are therefore repeatedly told by 'constitutional experts' that the referendum is 'inappropriate' and unnecessary in our Parliamentary democracy. Well they would, wouldn't they?

However, a point of warning is that, when forced to conduct a referendum, the Establishment will seek to phrase the questions in such a way as to fudge the basic issues and get the result it wants; so that the wording of the questions is all-important.

Revisionist

A term properly restricted to those who challenge the versions of history purveyed by so-called 'court' historians (those with privileged status within the present Establishment). The genuinely 'revisionist' historian is concerned to present the real evidence of the case, and is not interested in telling the Establishment or the general public what they would prefer to believe. The very fact, for example, that we never get to hear or read what Germans have to say about modern history is enough to cast serious doubt on all 'histories' produced by Jewish and other anti-German writers. Had Germany won the war, the history books would, of course, be entirely different.

The 'Holocaust' myth is a classic example of pseudo-history; its fragility proved by the extreme reluctance of public figures to express any doubts on the subject, the vicious hostility of the Jewish lobby towards anyone daring to question the 'evidence' and the rigid censorship of 'revisionist' historians by the mass media and major publishers.

Renegade

Anyone disloyal to racial kith and kin and to the security and future of the nation-state and homeland. The term therefore applies in particular to those advocating or supporting the surrender of national territory, or absorption of the nation-state into some supra-national entity like a federal Europe, or subordination of Britain's government to international agencies like the United Nations; those actively promoting or implementing multi-racialism; or those who passively co-operate with the people and policies involved in such activities.

Under a nationalist government those in the first two categories should incur the loss of citizenship as the most appropriate penalty, while those in the third category would not occupy senior positions in society.

Repatriation

The programme of returning coloured immigrants to their ancestral homelands within a period not exceeding 15 years of a nationalist government taking office.

Resettlement grants should be funded from the former 'Overseas Aid' budget, and the programmes should operate on a 'last in, first out' basis. In the meantime, there should be positive discrimination in favour of native British people in respect of housing, employment, education, taxation and social services. The programme should be conducted with all those British qualities of fairness, justice and generosity which attracted the immigrants here in the place; immigration is, after all, the sincerest form of international flattery.

Reverse Stereotype

Refers to the mass media practice whereby Negroes and Asians are cast in roles that they are unlikely to occupy in the real world. The aim is to protect their self-esteem and to persuade white people that racial differences are only skin-deep. Thus Negroes are now commonly cast in the roles of judges, scientists, police chiefs, admirals, academics, executives, tycoons etc., where they are shown rescuing white people from ignorance and incompetence and demonstrating their own superior attributes. These media fantasies provide a kind of social safety-valve for alien malcontents; but the effect is short-lived, as the aliens are daily reminded of their inability to compete in the White Man's world.

RPI Syndrome

Rationalised Personal inferiority (RPI) is a neurotic condition in which the individual is constantly fabricating spurious 'reasons' for his/her inferiority or failure. This attempt to protect a fragile self-esteem is associated with a tendency to project the blame onto other people or 'the system' or whatever.

It is characteristic of such people to make common cause with others exhibiting the same syndrome, such as 'under-privileged' immigrants, feminists and homosexuals. The condition is extremely widespread and therefore readily exploited by demagogues, unscrupulous lawyers and others in the grievance industry.

Religion

What passes for Christianity in this country today can only be described as superstitious sociology; a bland doctrine of welfare-mongering with guilt, humility and self-abasement as its cardinal principles. We can only have contempt for a Church which, in the name of Christianity, facilitates the Islamic occupation of whole neighbourhoods, condones homosexuality, promotes multi-racialism and will forgive everything.

Our race is our religion, and the nation is our church.

Artist who spent three days painting portrait of her dead mother

A candid painting of an artist's mother after she had died is in the running for a prestigious arts prize at the National Portrait Gallery.

Daphne Todd completed Last Portrait Of Mother in April last year - painted over three days as the body of mother Annie Mary Todd lay at an undertaker.

Annie, who is shown unclothed and wearing a white wristband, had been living with her daughter for the last 14 years of her life.

She had been the subject of several of the artist's paintings during her life, and had agreed to the post-death portrait after celebrating her 100th birthday five months before, the London gallery said.

Daphne Todd, 63, from East Sussex, who was the first female president of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, said: ' I talked things through with the undertaker, and they kindly gave me the time and space to paint the portrait. She was on a trolley, raised up on pillows, as I remember last seeing her in hospital.

'People do change and move after death. They sink into themselves - they continue on their way.'

Ms Todd said she carried on with the work until she began to feel uncomfortable.

Three artists have been shortlisted for the BP Portrait Award, an international arts prize that received a record 2,177 entries this year.

Ms Todd took second place in the gallery's Portrait Awards in 1984.

The other two artists this year are David Eichenberg, 38, and Michael Gaskell, 46.

American artist Eichenberg is shortlisted for Tim II, which shows his friend, sculptor Timothy A Stover, seated at work in an old warehouse in Toledo, Ohio.

Gaskell won second prize last year. Originally from Sheffield, he recently relocated to Leicester and only got to know his subject, Harry, when he agreed to sit for him.

Having seen Harry while he was out shopping with his family, the artist was persuaded to approach him by his wife.

The portrait, titled Harry, was completed in a 'short burst' of intense work last winter

National Portrait Gallery director Sandy Nairne is chairing the judging panel and described entries as 'another outstanding year'.

For the fourth year there will also be a BP Young Artist Award of £4,000 for the work of an entrant aged between 18 and 30.

The overall winners will be announced on June 22.

Fifty-eight portraits have been selected for an exhibition of entries at the National Portrait Gallery which will runs from June 24 to September 19.

I have recently become very interested in art, so much so I am teaching myself to paint. So I was very surprised to read that this rather unusual, if not macabre piece, has actually been short-listed for a major and prestigious prize.

There is hope for me yet.

Raquel Welch blames the Pill for decline of marriage

Miss Welch said the widespread use of oral contraceptives had led to a breakdown in norms of sexual morality and fuelled the growth of rampant promiscuity among the young.

She said that the situation has grown so grave that "these days nobody seems able to keep it in their pants or honour a commitment".

While it carried some benefits, the enduring legacy of the Pill, she argued, has been social anarchy.

Miss Welch found fame in the 1966 movie One Million Years BC and was voted by readers of Playboy magazine as the "most desired female of the 1970s".

But in an article to mark the introduction of the Pill to the US market 50 years ago she has now dramatically distanced herself from the fruits of the Sexual Revolution of which she was apart.

"The growing proliferation of birth control methods has had an awesome effect on both sexes and led to a sea change in moral values," she said in an article for CNN.

"As I've grown older over the past five decades and lived through this revolutionary period in female sexuality, I've seen how it has altered American society for better or worse," she said.

A positive consequence of the Pill was that it had "made it easier for a woman to choose to delay having children until after she established herself in a career", she said.

But a "significant and enduring" effect on women was the idea that they could have sexual intercourse "without any consequences" with the result that fewer today saw marriage as "a viable option".

She said that in spite of her own three failed marriages she still believed that marriage is the "cornerstone of civilisation, an essential institution that stabilises society, provides a sanctuary for children and saves us from anarchy".

Miss Welch, 69, said: "Seriously folks, if an ageing sex symbol like me starts waving the red flag of caution over how low moral standards have plummeted, you know it's gotta be pretty bad."

Immigration - How we lost count

New Tribe Rising?

“Is white the new black?”

So asks Kelefa Sanneh in the subtitle of “Beyond the Pale,” his New Yorker review of several books on white America, wherein he concludes we may be witnessing “the slow birth of a people.”

Sanneh is onto something. For after a year of battering as “un-American,” “evil-doers” and racists, and praise from talk-show hosts and Sarah Palin as “the real Americans,” Tea Party America seems to be taking on a new and separate identity.

Ethnonationalism — the recognition of an embryonic people that they are different from their neighbors, and the concomitant drive to live apart — is, as Arthur Schlesinger Jr. wrote 20 years ago, a more powerful force than any ideology, be it communism, fascism or democracy.

Ethnonationalism is the pre-eminent force of the age we have entered, the creator and destroyer of empires and nations. Even as Schlesinger was writing his “Disuniting of America,” Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union were disintegrating into 22 new nations, along the lines of ethnicity. In Dagestan, Ingushetia, Chechnya, Ossetia and Abkhazia, the process proceeds apace.

It has happened before — and here.

In the American colonies, the evil institution of slavery, followed by a century of segregation, created out of the children of captured Africans who had little in common other than color a new people, the African-Americans, who went out and voted 24-to-one for Barack Obama.

In 1754, the 13 colonies consisted of South Carolinians, New Yorkers, Pennsylvanians and Virginians, all loyal subjects of the king.

But after the contemptuous treatment of colonial soldiers in the French and Indian War, the Stamp Act, the Townshend duties, the Boston Massacre, the Tea Party, the Quartering Act and the Quebec Act, by 1775 a new people had been born: the Americans.

In 1770, New York colonists had erected a statue of George III in Bowling Green in grateful tribute for his repeal of the Townshend taxes. In July 1776, they pulled it down and melted it for lead bullets after Washington read his soldiers the Declaration of Independence portraying George III as another Ivan the Terrible.

“There is no such thing as a Palestinian people,” said Golda Meir. When she said it, she may have been right. But as generations have grown up under the occupation and two intifadas and a Gaza War, the Palestinians are a people today.

Adversity and abuse increase the awareness of separate identity and accelerate the secession of peoples from each other.

Obama in the campaign of 2008 recognized that “out there” in Middle America existed another country, far from the one he grew up in, far from the privileged Ivy League community to which he belonged.

“You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and … the jobs have been gone now for 25 years. … So it’s not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

Palin and Tea Partiers now repeat Obama’s disparaging line about their clinging to Bibles and guns — with defiant pride.

As others have done in our multicultural and multiethnic nation, this people is beginning to assert its identity, unapologetically.

Sioux gather at Little Bighorn to celebrate the massacre of Custer’s command. Hawaiian natives demand a new ethnically based government — and receive Obama’s blessing. Hispanics march under Mexican flags in Los Angeles to demand citizenship for illegal aliens.

Now Southerners are proudly commemorating ancestors who fought and fell in the Lost Cause and demanding recognition of Confederate History Month. And state governors are acceding.

In 2004, when Howard Dean reached out to “guys with Confederate flags in their pickup trucks,” Shelby Steele wrote that this was “absolutely verboten. Racial identity is simply forbidden to whites in America” because of their history and white guilt.

This, Sanneh suggests, is changing. The imputation of racism to Tea Partiers has not intimidated or cowed them.

When Obama named Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, there was no hesitation in blistering her for showing contempt for the rights of Frank Ricci and the white firefighters of New Haven, cheated of the promotions they had won in competitive exams.

When black Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates was arrested by Cambridge cop James Crowley, most Americans, despite Obama and media suggestions of racial profiling, sided with Crowley.

Why are the Tea Partiers not intimidated the way Republicans often are? Why is the charge of racism not working?

First, they do not feel the guilt of country-club Republicans.

Second, they know it to be untrue. While Tea Partiers are anti-Obama, they are also anti-Pelosi, anti-Martha Coakley and anti-Charlie Christ. The coming conflict is not so much racial as it is cultural, political and tribal.

Black America seems united. White America is the house divided, for it is in the womb of white America that this new people is gestating and fighting to be born.

During the time of National Party reforms in the seventies and eighties, the cliché "adapt or die" used to do the rounds. Nowadays, given the highest murder rate in the world, this should be modified slightly to read, "adapt and die". For the endemic social violence in South Africa is probably incurable.


Optimists think that violent crime can be solved through better policing, more efficient courts and more secure prisons. Even assuming that such improvements were possible under conditions of hard-core affirmative action, it must be admitted that criminal justice treats the symptom and not the cause of social violence. The Department of Correctional Services, for one, has lost 496 out of 500 former Deputy Directors since 1994, representing most of the intellectual capital in the department. Newcomers may learn their job properly, or they may not, but they have to be flown to overseas countries to find out how prisons work as most of those previously involved in managing our prisons are no longer there.


South Africa used to have a problem of political violence. It was not as bad as elsewhere in Africa, but for some reason elicited hysterical international condemnation. However, actors in political violence are mostly driven by some sort of creed or belief system. Whether such a person is a communist, an anarchist, a neo-Nazi or an ethnic or religious guerilla fighter, he is usually amenable to persuasion or compromise. Even a group of Muslim suicide bombers might declare peace if they were given a territory in which to set up an Islamic theocracy, governed only by themselves and not subject to any outside influence.


In the same way, South Africa's so-called liberation movements who were at one time fanatically convinced of the need for violent and bloody revolution, laid down arms and bombs upon being told that F.W. de Klerk would surrender power unconditionally. Solving political violence is often intractable, but not impossible. Not so social violence. Endemic crime, the breakdown of the social fabric, a sense of drift regarding norms of good conduct, point to a far deeper problem. The freedom fighter or urban terrorist is ultimately rational, despite a value system that normal society might find idiosyncratic.


But what is "normal society"? It is only the sum-total of behaviours prevalent in any given society at any given time. The Aztecs, infamously, practised daily human sacrifice to appease their sun god. It might revolt many of us today, but to them it was entirely normal. South Africa currently sacrifices about 87 humans per day to violent crime, or 32 000 per year. Those are only the ones who actually die. Scores of others are injured, maimed, traumatised, robbed, raped, burgled and so on.


In any suburb today an entire history of murders, hijackings, and other violent events can be written, if only the locals were narcissistic enough to consider their own history worth recording for posterity. On the other hand, social violence lacks the charm and grandeur of political violence as it is usually not committed in the interest of some glamorous cause like national liberation or world revolution but simply to acquire some hapless person's BMW or rape his wife because she happened to be inside.


However, some time ago a Johannesburg newspaper engaged in chronicling some local history in the suburbs of Westdene and Lakefield in Benoni. Nearly every resident had a story to tell, an entire litany of mayhem. Mr. John Gee miraculously survived a shot through the eye, but now feels traumatised. His wife says, "One lives in fear in one's own home. One does not sleep. One prays for protection, yet only more fears come."


But who are the authors of South Africa's social violence? Even asking this question presents one with a sense of discomfort, because most violent criminals in South Africa are young black men between the ages of 16 and 36. As one surgeon who had stitched together at least three child rape victims, two of whom were infants, said recently, "Probably white men commit such acts too; it is just that no-one in South Africa has come across such a case." Of course, it would be preposterous to say that all young black men are prone to violence.


Judging from our daily experiences in crime-torn South Africa, however, a sub-section of that population, large enough to cause more havoc than even a well-equipped guerrilla army of a few thousand men, has taken up practices such as heists, hold-ups, murders, sexual violence exacted upon women and children, and so on.


Explanations for such deviancy are manifold. The ubiquitous answer of it being due to apartheid might have been satisfying if other African societies never subject to group areas and a homeland system did not display similar traits. The Congo, Liberia, Sierra Leone come to mind. There is a whole nature/nurture debate around black violence, except that no adherent of the "nature" side would publicly admit to being one, for fear of being branded a racist. Even though mainstream American cancer research has conclusively shown that black men have higher levels of testosterone than their white counterparts, few would hazard the notion that this might be linked to their greater propensity for violent crime.


America has a gargantuan prison population of two million, over half of which consists of African-Americans. This is despite their minority status in the USA, comprising only 12% of an overall population amounting to 290 million. South Africa could neither afford nor succeed, given the dire state of our criminal justice system, in jailing a similar number of black male offenders. Currently, only 10% of murderers in South Africa get arrested and only 6% are convicted. Any murderer therefore has a 94% chance of getting away with it.


If by some miracle all serious criminals in the country had to be caught and imprisoned, the prison population would surely treble or quadruple from the present 200 000, which is already high by world standards. Not only is such an improvement inconceivable under current conditions, but it would also be politically unpopular with the ruling ANC who would be incarcerating large numbers of young black males who are mostly its own supporters at the polls. Few whites, if any, commit violent crime and there are only 3 900 of them in prison, mostly for white-collar offences such as fraud or insider trading on the stock exchange.


All that remains in the world's most violent society, is precisely to adapt and die. Twice as many South Africans of all races now die of murder than of road accidents - even though the road accident rate is also the highest in the world, surpassing that of Turkey. Crime extends to trade in driver's licences, so that a large number of drivers use so-called "bought licences", hardly a contribution to road safety.


There are some people naive enough to think that "something can be done about crime" in South Africa, mostly opposition politicians who dream about diverting funds from arms procurement to policing, but this would be futile. There are already three times as many private security personnel as state-employed policemen, and even they do not succeed in containing what has become Africa's only peacetime killing field.


"I killed them because they were white." These famous words were spoken last year by William Kekana, who participated in one of the most horrendous incidents in which the entire family of Mr. Clifford Rawstorne was wiped out, consisting of his fiancée, baby, as well as his own mother. Even this massacre of an entire family would not have made headlines, were it not for the fact that one year-old Kayla was executed on her very first birthday with a shot in the head. Needless to say, the two adult women were first raped before being killed. Both William Kekana and his accomplice, Charles Fido Baloyi, fell into the high-risk group of young black (and Coloured) males who commit almost all violent crime in the country.


South Africa actually has a Minister of Safety and Security, which to some might seem like an example of absurd humour. His Excellency Mr. Charles Nqakula, whose official résumé proudly states that he was once "a waiter and wine steward", has immortalised himself by euphemistically stating that there was no real crime problem in South Africa, except that it was "a little on the high side".


All in all, South Africa has got remarkably used to its new-found status as the crime capital of the world. The high-rise districts of Hillbrow and Berea in Johannesburg have been officially designated by Interpol as having the highest murder rate in the world, that is, 600 people per 100 000 population members per annum. Consider for a moment that such a figure represents 12 times the rate found in inner-city ghettoes in the United States, often seen as no-go zones by many Americans.


One British immigrant to South Africa who has survived three car hijackings, refuses to emigrate, stating that he is now accustomed to having Kalachnikovs pointed at him from pointblank range. Everyone knows a relative or friend who has been killed or at least subjected to some form of violent crime, and no South African can remotely imagine a society where people do not live behind razor wire, electrified fences, high walls, burglar bars and similar decorative props.


Outsiders might find our lifestyle bizarre, but many pundits in South Africa consider our society to be much more "normal" now than at any time in the past, which was tarnished by ethnic separation albeit without the present large-scale violence. At the height of segregation and apartheid under Hendrik Verwoerd, South Africa was almost as peaceful as Switzerland but she was immoral. Today we are the apotheosis of racial morality and political correctness, yet as violent as the Congo or Liberia. Surprisingly, however, our economy continues to function amid the carnage. No economist has ever studied this as far as I know, but not only is crime our biggest industry - bigger than gold-mining or manufacturing - it also stimulates consumption as stolen goods are replaced; it is a boon to the insurance and security industries and ultimately makes surgeons and undertakers rich. The government earns billions of rands in Value-Added Tax on stolent goods being replaced with new ones. So crime pays.


News about killings or shoot-outs no longer elicits the slightest surprise. It is part of our daily existence, and one assumes the lethal risks attending to something as simple as going shopping or driving to work. My wife, for example, has twice been to the local shopping centre where in the one instance a shoot-out was taking place in the parking area so that she had to hide between the cars with our 18 month-old son in her arms; in the second case an armed robbery had just taken place with the robbers casually strolling by with their guns and their loot.


Everyone knows someone who has been killed, raped or maimed. Just this week, the wife of a friend and former literary editor of Die Burger, François Smith, was stabbed to death with a screwdriver in their home in Wellington, near Cape Town. Her murderer was a 16-year-old squatter camp resident whose race was omitted by the press but presumably few, if any whites, reside in his particular squatter camp which is dedicated to black Africans. Lisbé Smuts-Smith was a well-known academic and head of the Afrikaans literature department at the University of Cape Town. Just two weeks ago, another UCT academic, mathematician Brian Hahn, was attacked by a former student, dr. Maleafisha Steve Tladi (35). Hahn died in hospital a week
later, while Tladi was released on bail of R500 (about $80).


Two years ago Louw Rabie, a brilliant albeit reclusive geologist and brother of author Jan Rabie, was beaten to death with a fence pole by two Coloured men to whom he had lent some money a week earlier. Police in the small Cape town of Montagu readily caught his murderers because they happened to have drinking money during the week, taken from his home. He was 80 years old, but in good health. He is reputed to have been one of the most brilliant geologists and intellectuals this country has ever produced, writing copiously throughout his life but disdaining publication and public esteem. Africans with their oral tradition are fond of saying that "when an old person dies, a library burns down". What strikes me about the relentless killings of educated whites, is that the criminals are indeed "burning down the libraries" of this country and physically exterminating the intellectual class, much like Pol Pot did in Cambodia.


The media are celebrating youth, dance, colour, being black and exuberant - as opposed to the quiet studiousness of middle-aged and elderly whites, the bearers of knowledge and understanding. Are these learned whites who are being killed in exuberant, paradisiacal outbreaks of violence simply the remnants of a civilisation that is being eradicated in the name of decolonisation? No government spokesman has ever condemned such killings; so we may assume that the present regime is completely indifferent to them, where such killings do not enjoy their tacit support.


Around our local school in the past week there have been two car hijackings, as well as one murder. It is not really considered to be an exceptionally violent area. Most of this is not even reported in the press, because there really is not enough space and ordinary crime is no longer newsworthy. It needs some further sadistic element to make the front page, such as babies getting killed or raped, or elderly farmers being tortured to death. Farming in South Africa is now arguably the most dangerous profession in the world with more than 1600 farmers murdered since 1994, often in macabre and dehumanising ways.


To the outside world, white South Africans are congenitally evil. If our murderers and rapists had been white and their victims black, Europe or the United States would long ago have sent an expeditionary force to put a stop to it. At present, news of white suffering in South Africa inspires the occasional yawn in Western capitals. This is why a recent article in The Despatch, detailing the rape of a dog by three black men, gave me some hope that a chord will be struck somewhere in the coolly indifferent breasts of our fellow-Westerners. Even if the lives of Louw Rabie, Brian Hahn, Lisbé Smuts-Smith, Kayla Rawstorne and tens of thousands of others are of no value to them, perhaps they will take pity on the mongrel bitch in Grahamstown that was recently raped by three black men. Or perhaps two black men, as the third one protested his innocence upon being dragged out of the shack by screaming, "I came here to relieve myself. These two were raping the dog when I arrived!" Cruelty to humans, especially white humans, is today a normal feature of our society, just like human sacrifice used to be in the culture of the Aztecs. Cruelty to animals, or non-consensual sex with dogs, may still evoke some sympathy, not only locally, but also internationally. I therefore feel sorry for Masganda - the name of the dog concerned - who was rescued with a bleeding vagina and in need of veterinary attention, but perhaps this lowly creature of uncertain lineage could become a martyr for our cause in alerting opinion-makers and political leaders of our plight.


Cycling has become a popular sport in South Africa. However, its practitioners regularly get shot at by gangs of black youths in the street, so that many of them carry guns and knives for self-defence on their bicycles. Members of the Johannesburg mountain-bike club were outraged a while ago when two cyclists, Scott and Lloyd Griffith, were charged with murder after an armed battle with their four black assailants, one of whom succumbed to his wounds.


Most of the time, however, whites are helpless victims of crime. The government has recently passed a new gun law which makes it difficult, if not impossible, to own a fire-arm. They have also abolished rural commandos of military reservists entrusted with crime-prevention in the country, without any police units replacing them. Occasionally the newspapers carry stories of crime victims successfully defending themselves against attacks, offering armed resistance. As a result of the new gun law, this will soon end and we shall simply be able to hide or flee from our assailants. Defending oneself against a marauding robber or rapist might be a manifestation of racism, and is therefore frowned upon as being a kind of "right-wing" response.


Being robbed of one's vehicle or household belongings is now considered quite normal, and often people ascribe escaping with their lives to their own astuteness, such as being friendly to the robber, helping him load the effects into a vehicle, not looking him in the face so as not to recognise him afterwards, et cetera. A friend of mine in Kempton Park kept up a reasonable conversation with the thieves emptying his house, tied up as he was with a gun pointed at him. He survived, although his elderly mother was badly roughed up and had to be hospitalised. In other instances, of course, people are not so lucky and they become just another murder statistic. Then they simply adapt and die.

Probably no mainstream newspaper in South Africa will publish it, because it refers to the race and gender of violent criminals, which is taboo here as elsewhere in the Western world. As George Orwell said, however, "during times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act".
